Skincare tips for staying hydrated this Summer

Summer is well and truly here! As the temperature rises, this impacts on your skin as it causes dryness, increases breakouts and sun damage. Here are a couple of things to keep you skin happy over the Summer months

This goes without saying but wearing SPF is one of the best things you can do to protect your skin. The sun, while glorious, ages skin due to the effect UV radiation has on the way skin cells operate. This is primarily from UVA, however as UVB is associated with burning, go for a broad spectrum SPF that protects you from both types of UV radiation.

Finding the right sunscreen, particularly for the face takes time so if possible, test out products before purchasing. If you have sensitive skin or if you are prone to breakouts, look for physical sunscreens that zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they are gentler on skin.

Avoid over-exfoliation

Exfoliation is important as it promotes skin renewal and to reveal softer skin, but keep it to once or at most twice a week. Exfoliating too often does more harm than good. The dead cells on your skin act as a protective barrier against the sun so over-exfoliation removes some of this layer, leaving your skin vulnerable to sun damage.

Look for Summer friendly skincare products

Look out for Summer friendly products that will keep your skin hydrated and protects it from sun damage. For quick hydration, spray a floral mist following exposure to the sun to cool things down and sooth skin.

For daily use, opt for products that have ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and alpha hydroxyl acids such as lactic acid. While hyaluronic acids have been around for a while, it has seen a resurgence in the last few years with various forms being available including hyaluronic serums. This super ingredient is able to hold 1,000 times its weight, so a must-have for dry skin.

Another key thing to add to your skincare routine are serums rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants helps your skin in so many ways, making it a really good addition to skincare routines. One of the key things it does is to combat against the processes that cause ageing. There are several amazing antioxidants to look out for but the main ones are Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Retinol and even green tea. This can be available through ingredients such as rosehip oil and argan oil or through extracts of the antioxidants themselves.

Eat your way to hydrated skin

As they say – beauty starts from within! Drinking water is of course essential for hydration. But to help you maximise your liquid intake, increase your intake of fruits and vegetables with a high water content and those that are rich in antioxidants. There are quite a few that fall under this category including broccoli, oranges, berries, papaya and tomatoes.

Food rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as avocados, nuts, seeds and oily fish are another great addition to the diet. Rich in essential fatty acids, they act as a natural moisturiser for your skin.
